Air Quality (AQI) and Elevation: Two Overlooked Metrics That Shape Daily Life

Why our sidebar filters track average AQI alongside city altitude—and how seasonal burning or high mountain air can catch newcomers off guard.

When planning a scouting trip, almost everyone checks average temperatures and rainfall. Far fewer people check Air Quality Index (AQI) or Elevation—yet those two numbers have an immediate impact on your sleep, exercise, and respiratory health.

That is why we built a dedicated Preferred Air Quality slider right into the Voyterra sidebar. Looking across our dataset reveals some striking contrasts:

  • 🌬️ Clean Coastal & Atlantic Breezes: Atlantic-facing hubs like Porto (avg AQI 28), Lisbon (avg AQI 32), and Honolulu (avg AQI 20) benefit from steady ocean winds that keep particulate matter low year-round.
  • 🔥 Seasonal Agricultural Burning: Chiang Mai boasts an outstanding 85/100 Healthcare Score and 78/100 Safety Score, making it one of Southeast Asia's premier hubs. However, between February and April, regional agricultural burning pushes its annual average AQI to 72, meaning many long-term expats plan a beach rotation to coastal Thailand or Vietnam during smoky season.
  • ⛰️ High-Altitude Acclimation: Some of the mildest climates in the Americas sit high in the cordilleras. Medellín sits at 1,495 meters (~4,900 ft), Mexico City at 2,240 meters (~7,350 ft), and Cuenca at 2,560 meters (~8,400 ft). If you are sensitive to altitude, give yourself a full week before judging your energy levels.
